The Milena Jesenská Fellowship for Journalists 2026 is one of Europe’s most respected awards for cultural journalism. Designed as a recognition of excellence, it offers journalists protected time away from daily newsroom tasks to pursue research-driven, intellectually rich projects that contribute to public discourse.
“Cultural journalism” is interpreted broadly — spanning arts, literature, history, philosophy, politics, sociology, international affairs, and more. Projects may also intersect with IWM’s signature research fields, such as democracy, social justice, inequality, memory studies, migration, or European integration.
The fellowship supports both established and emerging voices in journalism who demonstrate a strong professional track record, investigative rigor, and a commitment to meaningful public engagement.
Fellowship Conditions
Selected fellows will receive:
- A three-month residency in Vienna (between Sept 2026 – June 2027)
- EUR 3,300 monthly stipend
- Full office space, internet, in-house research facilities, and administrative support
- Integration into the IWM community of scholars, seminars, and events

Eligibility

Required Documents
Applicants must prepare the following:
1. Letter of motivation
Explain:
- how your project benefits from time at the IWM,
- its relevance to IWM’s research mission,
- concrete writing and research goals.
2. Project description (max. 550 characters)
A concise summary of the proposed topic.
3. Project proposal (max. 7,500 characters)
Must include:
a) objectives
b) current state of research
c) methodology
d) work plan
4. Curriculum Vitae
Include full list of publications.
5. Two letters of recommendation
- At least one from an editor, publisher, or fellow journalist
- Recommendations must be submitted directly by the recommender through the webform
- Recommenders receive an automated email after you submit your application
All materials must be in English.
Evaluation & Selection
Applications meeting formal requirements will undergo expert review. The jury evaluates based on:
- originality and relevance of the proposed project
- clarity of objectives and methodological soundness
- applicant’s professional capacity to complete the project
- contribution to cultural or societal understanding
- interdisciplinary or comparative dimensions
- potential policy or public impact

About Milena Jesenská
Milena Jesenská (1896–1944) was a pioneering journalist, translator, cultural critic and outspoken political commentator. Known widely for her correspondence with Franz Kafka, she served as a crucial bridge between Czech and German intellectual cultures.
Her life was marked by courage and resistance — she was imprisoned at Ravensbrück concentration camp for her political activities and died there in 1944. The fellowship honours her legacy of independent thinking, humanism and fearless journalism.
