The CIP Planning Scholarships 2026 are designed to support high-quality student research that contributes to the advancement of the planning profession in Canada. Scholarships are awarded to individual students or small student teams whose work demonstrates:

Through the CIP Planning Scholarships 2026, CIP aims to encourage emerging planners to pursue impactful research while supporting their academic and professional development.


Eligibility

To be eligible for the CIP Planning Scholarships 2026, applicants must meet all of the following criteria:

  • Be a student member of the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP) in good standing for the current academic year
  • Be enrolled full-time in an accredited Canadian planning program
    • Accreditation must be by PSB (Professional Standards Board) or OUQ (Ordre des urbanistes du Québec)
  • Be enrolled in the program during the term in which the scholarship is awarded

❗ Important:

  • Professional members (MCIP®) and candidate members who have returned to school are not eligible for the CIP Planning Scholarships 2026.

Members of equity-deserving groups are encouraged to self-identify during the application process.


Eligible Research Projects

Projects submitted under the CIP Planning Scholarships 2026 must meet the following requirements:

  • The project (e.g. thesis, practicum, major research paper) must be proposed or in progress at the time of application
  • Projects must have a target completion date within 18 months, starting from the month research proposals are completed
  • Applicants must provide:
    • A project timeline
    • A justification for the proposed project length

🚫 Projects that are already completed are not eligible for funding under the CIP Planning Scholarships 2026.

Applications for the CIP Planning Scholarships 2026 must be submitted through the official online application system.

Required Information

Applicants will be asked to provide:

  • A brief biography, including studies and personal interests
  • The title, focus area, and timeline of the research project
  • A description of:
    • The research rationale and objectives

  • A bibliography and list of sources

  • Submit a copy of their completed project to CIP-PSTF
  • Consent to publication of their work (in whole or in part) by CIP-PSTF and/or CIP
