Overview
The Albertine Translation Fund and Prize 2026 is a flagship initiative dedicated to promoting French and Francophone literature in the English-speaking world. Launched in 2022 by Villa Albertine’s Books & Ideas Department and the Albertine Foundation, the program builds upon the legacy of the former French Voices initiative.
Through a competitive selection process led by independent experts—academics, translators, booksellers, and publishing consultants—the program supports translations that reflect the diversity, innovation, and vitality of French literary production.
Eligible works span a wide range of genres, including:
- Fiction
- Nonfiction
- Children’s literature
- Comics and graphic novels
- Poetry
Selected projects are recognized not only for translation quality but also for the literary merit of the original French text.
Eligibility
Applicants to the Albertine Translation Fund and Prize 2026 must meet the following criteria:
- The title must generally have been published in France within the past 10 years
- Each funding cycle may include one classic work of French or Francophone literature that needs a new or renewed translation
- Translators, French publishers, and U.S. publishers may apply
- The English-language publisher must be based in the United States
- Publishers based solely in the UK, Canada, India, or other non-U.S. countries are not eligible
Titles without a U.S. publisher at the time of selection may still be considered. However, the French publisher must secure a U.S. publishing contract within one year, or the grant will be withdrawn.
