Overview

International Residency Photo Archive 2026 invites artists, researchers, and visual practitioners to work deeply with the Estonian National Museum’s photo archive, which includes more than 400,000 photographs spanning from the mid-19th century to the digital era. The residency places the archive at the center of critical inquiry—examining how photographs are collected, classified, digitised, and interpreted over time.

The program is grounded in visual anthropology, treating photography not merely as documentation but as a cultural practice shaped by power, ethics, technology, and institutional frameworks. Residents will collaborate using a shared body of archival material, ensuring comparability while allowing for diverse interpretive approaches.

A central outcome of the International Residency Photo Archive 2026 is the co-creation of a large-scale exhibition (742 sqm) in ERM’s temporary exhibition hall. This exhibition will make visible the hidden structures of archival systems and explore how different perspectives can radically alter the meaning of the same photographic material.

By combining archival research with contemporary exhibition practices, the residency encourages participants to question institutional knowledge systems and experiment with new modes of storytelling, interpretation, and collective authorship within museum contexts.
