The European Green Capital and Green Leaf Awards 2028 recognize the cities that lead Europe’s transition to greener, healthier, and more resilient urban environments. The awards were officially launched on 8 December 2025, with Commissioner Roswall encouraging all ambitious cities to apply and share their successes with the wider European community.
Eligibility
Cities applying for the European Green Capital and Green Leaf Awards 2028 must meet the following criteria:
European Green Capital Award (EGC)
- Cities with 100,000+ inhabitants
- Demonstrated environmental excellence
- Proven long-term sustainability strategies and governance models
European Green Leaf Award (EGL)
- Cities/towns with 20,000+ inhabitants
- Strong commitment to green transformation
- Prioritization of citizen engagement and innovation
Assessment Areas
Independent sustainability experts evaluate eligible cities on seven environmental indicators:
- Air quality
- Water management
- Biodiversity, green areas and land use
- Waste and circular economy
- Noise reduction
- Climate change mitigation
- Climate change adaptation
Finalists are selected by July 2026 and invited to present before a jury in October 2026.
