About Paul Celan

Paul Celan (1920–1970), born Paul Antschel, was a Romanian Jewish poet, translator and one of the most influential German-language literary figures of the post–World War II era. His life was marked by profound trauma—his parents perished in Nazi labour camps, and he was interned for eighteen months before escaping.

Celan’s poetry and translations deeply shaped European literary modernism and remain central to cultural and historical studies. This fellowship commemorates his legacy by supporting translators who foster deeper intellectual and cultural exchange across Europe.
